I wonder what the best way to travel is. I know a few that are definitely bad. But none that are always right. I’m currently asking myself that on Fuerteventura. Even though the wind yield was more than poor, we saw and experienced a lot. We completely overlooked other things. Dominik is probably just arriving home for the winter. I’m staying here for another week.

Travelling alone is always different to travelling together. It’s more strenuous, less secure and usually much more expensive because of the rooms. Nevertheless, both are good. When you’re travelling alone, you see completely different things. I didn’t notice how empty everything was here last week.

I drive through Corralejo. Most of the shopping centres are 75% empty. The bars and restaurants look similar: if they’re not already closed, they at least look like they’re about to be. I go into a supermarket to make sure that people are bipeds. Apart from the cashier, no one is there. The cashier says “Gracias por su vista”. The cashier says nothing.

One last time to the beach at El Cotillo. It can be empty. Empty beaches are beautiful. Empty towns and bars are not. I have a snack and look out at the windless sea. A few surfers play with the waves. Why do I have to go kitesurfing of all things? Why has there been no wind for days? As long as you have a common goal, it’s far less noticeable. I drive back to an empty city.

My new accommodation is the only hostel in town, Sol y Mar. After more than 100 hostels worldwide, I don’t have high expectations. This one is completely unloving. I get into my bare four-bed dorm via the garage. Everything is empty. I go into town with a few English people, but two beers won’t fill it up. Just me. Back to the hostel. Three “travellers” are silently surfing the internet and writing stupid blogs.
