I promised this one. Because I was able to get to know many beautiful places in Vienna with lots of good people. Lots of pubs, lots of restaurants, lots of nights out. I will miss Vienna.
Pubs in Vienna
Chic indie cinema and colourful, somewhat hip bar. You sit in the foyer, DJs play good electronic sound. Weird birds and old punk grannies sit on the cracked couches. Every now and then a sandler is kicked out. But that never disturbs the peace.[Map]
Ost-Klub We were there for an election event organised by the Green Party. Binder and Kriegelstein and seven other bands played for free. Great and crowded as hell. Beer is quite expensive, like everywhere else in Vienna. Bands mostly play Balkan-influenced music in the style of DJ Shantel, DJ afterwards is the same.[Map]
Flex The Lemonheads were here recently in a very small hall right on the Danube Canal. Unfortunately I missed it. Would certainly have been a great concert in front of just 800 people. The bar next door used to be a grungy punk bar. Now there are leather couches around and people are sipping trendy cocktails. And no, the visitors aren’t that young either.[Map]
Cafe Alt Wien Smoking is done in every pub in Vienna. In none of the others. If you don’t have a beer after a quarter of an hour, it’s not the waiter’s fault. Just blow away the smoke and wave quickly through the tunnel towards the bar to the keeper. The sound is a colourful mix, just like the people. A bit grubby but nice. Washing clothes helps after the third time.[Map]
Loos Bar The smallest institution in Vienna. Built at the beginning of the 20th century by Adolf Loos, very beautiful dark, dignified interior. Narrowest toilet exit in the world. For those who get stuck: There is a 50cm long alternative couch directly in front of the toilet door. Nice old jazz. Prices are steep, as befits an institution. [Map]
Wirr Bar with table football and basement disco. Colourful mix, good sound and good beer. They serve very tasty egg dishes, which you devour at simple, bare wooden tables. There are often live concerts in the beautiful cellar at weekends. [Map]
Flanagans Irish Pub What to add? Er… Guinness, darts, rugby matches, loud English pop music. In other words: completely different from any other Irish pub. Cheers.[Map]
Restaurants in Vienna
Sri Thai Imbiss There are hardly any good Thai restaurants in Vienna. That’s why this place has become world famous. The boss is a dictator with control neurosis, prices far too high for what is on offer. The food is quite nice, but not outstanding. Vegetasia As the name suggests: vegetarian only. The psychotic thing about Vegetasia is the funny thing: they make vegetables look and taste like meat, and they do it damn credibly and well. Free choice of pork, chicken, duck, beef. Good interior, great minimalist design.[Map]
Biergarten Dreier Quaint pub, wood everywhere, good beer. The portions are large, good and reasonably priced. Very nice shady beer garden in summer.[Map]
MWG Cafete Bad, bad, bad, cold and soggy. But you don’t have to leave the institute. On the fourth floor, prices are the same as outside and quality is from the cellar. Even tasty, simple things usually taste rubbish.[Map]
Brandtner Heurigen There are countless Heurigen in Vienna, but this one was something special. You have to travel 30 kilometres by train to the outskirts of Vienna, in the middle of Schönborn-Mallebarn. But it’s worth it. Delicious food, good wine, a beautiful wine cellar and everything as cheap as in grandad’s day. It’s hard to come back if you get stuck. [Blog entry][Map]
La Bodega Centrally located Spanish restaurant with very good tapas and gigantic freshly baked wood-fired bread. The wine is said to be good, but I can only say the same about the beer. [Map]
Yun Gao Asia Restaurant Delicious, dusty plastic sushi from the conveyor belt at oversalted prices. Bon Appetit![Map]
Fasanl Wirt Definitely the wrong name. Schnitzel is quite nice, but the wild boar stinks and is stringy. Smelly permanent alkies at the bar, snotty waiter. Large Coke costs a whopping five euros. Extortionate landlord.[Map]
