Meditation And Massacre
My father was a good person. When the bad grades came, he gave me a meditation cassette: Superlearning – learning in your sleep. Firstly, this end of the educational flagpole made me fall asleep quickly, secondly, it didn’t do what it was supposed to – and ultimately left me clearly traumatised by meditation as a child.
Today I am a so-called head person. Unfortunately, this hardly helps when playing chess, but it definitely manifests itself in a pronounced scepticism towards any skullduggery that cannot be logically justified. According to my last room neighbour – God have mercy on his soul – some meditation CDs have a more disastrous effect on me than a mixture of crack and crystal meth. (more…)
Günther Grass, Israel & The Atomic Bomb
I’m a child of the eighties. Unfortunately, when “The Day After” was first broadcast on public television, I apparently had one of those stupid sensitive phases. The film grabbed me so hard that I couldn’t sleep for months. And when I did, I had nightmares. The nuclear deterrent had really worked on me: I was terrified of nuclear war.
The cold war became warmer, perestroika planted flowers and my neck tension eased. For years, growing up relatively undisturbed to grunge and green energy, I thought: the world has learnt something. It was on the right track. Then Bush came along, and the new “non” imperialism made bold new demands. (more…)
Dear Continentale Life Insurance
We have now been together for 10 years. During this time, I have made monthly contributions of €35.79 towards your welfare. Within 10 years, over € 4700 came together. In the end, there was still €3600 left. I am disappointed. I thought our relationship would last forever and we would both be good for each other. But unfortunately that was a fallacy. You only ever took, I gave.
Of course, nobody knows where stock market prices are going. Anyone can make a mistake. I’ve also speculated myself. But burning through a whopping 25 per cent over a period of 10 years with a few lows and many long highs is clearly a mature achievement, for which I pay you my respect. (more…)
Thank you, care emergency!
The care crisis in Germany is really starting to piss me off. Until a few months ago, I didn’t really care. But now I have a nurse as a friend. Unfortunately, one who became one because she really cares. The effects are gradually becoming quite drastic, even for me as a web designer who loves to work at night.
The care crisis in Germany didn’t come as a surprise. It’s more like a 200-metre tsunami in slow motion. Everyone suddenly mutates into surfing meerkats, standing in amazement on the coast and waxing their dusty surfboards. As if they had never seen a wave before. As if you could still ride this one with the correct style. 200 metres to the left of the nearest nuclear power plant. (more…)
Who can have the atomic bomb?
The whole of southern Germany has been in the doldrums for days. Not even a large thunderstorm front from the west brought the hoped-for fresh wind. My kites have been modernising in their bags, my brain has been doing the same in my skull. Nothing is moving. It’s time to go travelling again.
Germany has changed. Sido now raps with censorship bleeps and RTL reporters do black bar reports on nudist beaches. Folk music zombies introduce their moderation with trendy tandem parachute jumps and hotel testers get upset about “unacceptable conditions” in the form of dust. All really important. (more…)
Who actually voted for Bush?
The reactions to my announcement “I’m going to America” were clear: “You? What have you been saying about Bush for years?”. All my friends were right. It’s weird, I just wanted to have a few prejudices confirmed. But to this day it hasn’t worked at all.
Afternoon. A bus stop in Seattle. A woman asks for the time and after two sentences hears that I’m from Germany. Embarrassing. I already know what’s coming next. She asks what I think of Bush. I want to answer, but she’s already ranting off with a heart-warming tirade of hatred. I like America more and more. (more…)
