Markgrafenheide is one of Rostock’s home spots. The journey from the city centre takes about 30 minutes by car. In Markgrafenheide you can only park centrally and for a fee. Many of the small residential streets are fire service access roads. Never park in the wild! There is a lot of towing.
The central car park is often full in summer. In addition, the kite beach is a nice 800m walk away at the northern end of the beach. You can also park at the beach resort in the far north – at a nice €1.50 per hour. Walk to the dog beach from approx. 350m. Kitesurfing is tolerated here according to the water police.
The fine sand squeaks with joy. Only two other kiters share my first session in almost two months. The wind is blowing side-on today at a cosy 18 knots.
The spot is unsuitable for beginners. All along the beach there are groynes at close 20 metre intervals 10 to 15 metres out into the water. Only at the northern volleyball court does the distance increase to 30 metres. In wind holes in particular, it can be difficult to get out between them in westerly winds. I miscalculate several times.
The kickers are half a metre high today, but they break very close to the outer end of the groyne. If you jump, you should only do so outwards and with maximum distance from the groyne. Further out there is a swell of just under a metre. I have two hours of fun in the water in a mix of sun and rain, followed by a finely breaded kite schnitzel on the wet beach.
