Everyone has been waiting increasingly desperately for wind for three days. It keeps raining cats and dogs. We’re not killing time, but black and white striped mosquitoes that leave wonderfully infectious pimple-like giant bumps if you’re too slow. Zack. Two more. 107 today.
We watch too many DVDs, albeit good ones, from the Safari Lodge’s extensive collection. My imported beer supply is drastically depleted, and no cigarette helps against the hordes of mosquitoes. We drink kava, eat, chat and wait for the wind. Reading: The Kite Runner.
In between? I swim 1.5km over to the neighbouring Dolphin Island. Pink got married here, but apparently didn’t leave a lasting colour impression. The palm leaves are as green as everywhere else. I take the kayak out to the nearest beach. My arms are heavy every evening.
I feed the fish on the jetty on the other side of the island. I don’t swim in water, but in 1000 rainbow colours. More fish than water. When the toast is off, they start biting my fingers. The headline “Kitesurfer eaten by cichlids while waiting for wind” forms on the inside of my diving goggles. I hastily swim ashore and put my toes up.
Tropical downpours. More water in the air than in the sea. The roof leaks, the generator breaks down. Sitting in the round. Waiting. Silence. In the morning, Warren digs new channels in the rain. The whole garden is under water. I want WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND!
