Kitesurfing on Boa Vista

The wind comes back on the penultimate day. I don’t need any more offshore wind. At lunchtime I get a trip to the RIU Karamboa Hotel in the south of the bay of Sal Rei. The wind here is only about 30 degrees side-offshore. I set up and have a look around.

Another one of those Smurf houses. All-inclusive terrourists, snot-covered banderl wearers and a caipi with beach volleyball. Sun bangers, topless, fuck everything and especially the country and its culture. Off to the bar. A water please, here’s the money. But drinks are only available everywhere with a banderl, nothing else.

No matter. I set up and go out. The shorebreak is quite mild today at 1.5 metres, according to the regulars. No problem, get out, jump and finally kite until I drop on day nine. After two hours I go out again briefly because of the calm. A Canadian does the relaunch.

I shout to him in English “Get away from the surf shed!” But he doesn’t get it. Without me giving the OK sign, he lets the kite up too far in the power zone. It scrapes along the roof of the surf shed and makes a disgusting pffffff sound at the top. Land again. Luckily no tube, just a OnePump cap. Out again for another hour until the wind dies down. 6km back along the beach to Sal Rei. What a perfect day…

The next day Boa Vista bids me farewell with a perfect 22 knots. As always, it was very shifty, but enough for a good ride and clean jumps. On the way home I have to say goodbye to many good people. Kitesurfing on Boa Vista was definitely not cheap but definitely worth the flight.
